Hotel Morgan

Morgantown’s epi­cen­ter of his­tory, cul­ture, cel­eb­ra­tion, and con­nec­tion for nearly a cen­tury, Hotel Mor­gan, a Wyndham Hotel ush­ers in a new era of style and soph­ist­ic­a­tion on High Street. Com­pletely ren­ov­ated and reima­gined in 2020, the hotel pairs his­tor­ic charm with con­tem­por­ary amen­it­ies, strik­ing the per­fect bal­ance between new and nos­tal­gic. Hotel Mor­gan has been a quint­es­sen­tial fix­ture in the uni­ver­sity town of Mor­gan­town, West Vir­gin­ia since 1925. With its his­tory tightly inter­twined with that of West Vir­gin­ia Uni­ver­sity, the Hotel con­tin­ues to leave its mark on stu­dents, edu­cat­ors, par­ents, alumni, and the loc­al com­munity.

Venue

The Mor­gan­town Event Cen­ter and 300-space park­ing gar­age are loc­ated adja­cent to the Water­front Place Hotel and Con­fer­ence Cen­ter on the Mononga­hela River in Mor­gan­town. The large main event space can accom­mod­ate up to 2,000 guests for a vari­ety of events includ­ing con­certs, plays, box­ing matches, ban­quets and con­ven­tions. The facil­ity also includes a full cater­ing kit­chen and sup­port spaces.

The site for the pro­ject is phys­ic­ally con­nec­ted to the exist­ing Two Water­front Place Con­fer­ence Cen­ter in Mor­gan­town’s Water­front Dis­trict. It is adja­cent to the Caper­ton Rail Trail and the Mononga­hela River. The slope of the site requires the build­ing to be two stor­ies at the river level and one story at the street level.

The design solu­tion posi­tioned shared lobby spaces on the upper and lower levels adja­cent to the exist­ing con­fer­ence centre. Ver­tic­al cir­cu­la­tion via a grand stair­case and lifts provide access to the 2,100 m² of event space. The gar­age is loc­ated at the end of the devel­op­ment and a con­course provides dir­ect access for guests and vis­it­ors to the event centre and hotel. Out­door ter­races on the upper and lower levels provide gath­er­ing areas with river views. Back-of-house areas con­nect dir­ectly to the main event space and include the com­mer­cial kit­chen, ser­vice cor­ridors, stor­age and load­ing docks. A green room with a private kit­chen for use by per­formers is also provided. A dec­or­at­ive lat­tice ceil­ing provides visu­al interest and access to a soph­ist­ic­ated sys­tem of hoists for truss rig­ging, loud­speak­er clusters, light­ing pos­i­tions and smoke man­age­ment. The flex­ib­il­ity of the build­ing’s infra­struc­ture accom­mod­ates everything from ban­quets to box­ing.
